Jenoptik plans to expand its optics manufacturing capacities in Dresden

02 Jun 2021

Following rising demand from semiconductor sector, photonics group acquires new a property and will invest in cleanroom fab.

As a result of the rising demand for optics and sensors for the semiconductor industry, Jenoptik intends to expand its manufacturing capacities and invest in a manufacturing building and office complex at its Dresden, Germany, site. To this end, the company acquired a 24,000 sqm (260,000 sqft) plot of land in the Airportpark Dresden in May 2021.

In Dresden is part of an important region for the semiconductor industry, with many global companies and research institutes located there. Planning for a new Jenoptik clean room building and a modern office complex will now start and should be ready for approval in the course of this year, says the firm.

At the moment, construction is scheduled to begin in the secnd half of 2022, with production at the new factory starting in early 2025. Jenoptik will announce further details once planning will have been completed.

Future lithography technologies

As a significant development and production partner for optical and micro-optical systems with the highest quality standards, Jenoptik is involved in the development and introduction of future lithography technologies in semiconductor manufacturing. The photonics specialist and especially its Light & Optics division draw on more than 150 years of expertise in optics, sensor technology and precision mechanics.

“With our investment we are securing our further growth and strengthening our position as a reliable supplier to the global semiconductor equipment industry,” says Jenoptik President & CEO Stefan Traeger. Around the world, semiconductor manufacturers are investing in the expansion of production capacities due to rising demand resulting from the digitization of almost all areas of life.

Jenoptik has had a direct presence in Dresden since 2007 and is there part of a cooperation network consisting of research institutes and industrial partners. The photonics company designs and produces optical components using lithographic processes as well as precision sensor modules.
