Cosmic collision
The gravitational wave detected at LIGO is believed to have resulted from a collision between two black holes, each around 30 times the mass of the sun, 1.3 billion light-years away. Around three solar masses worth of energy was released as the larger black hole was "born". Image: LIGO.
